Millenial Worker? Don’t forget about respect!

Are you a millennial or young worker and want to know what skills you need to score your first job? Here’s a secret from HR Solutions: It’s not PowerPoint, Excel or Photoshop. A recent survey found that employers care more about “soft skills”—such as integrity, reliability and teamwork—than they do technical abilities like reading comprehension and mathematics. Hard skills can be taught but in today’s job market, employers are more concerned about whether a job candidate has the right attitude and work ethic first.

Respect is a great characteristic that businesses say they value in younger employees—and what younger employees can do during a job interview to show that they have it for the job, potential co-workers and the company.

Respect

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. A staggering 84% of Human Resource professionals said it’s an extremely important quality for entry-level job seekers and younger workers to have. According to a recent study, respect entails being able to work effectively with colleagues who have diverse backgrounds or opinions.

Employers want to create a collaborative environment. Because this includes different generations working well together, a younger worker should express during the job interview that they look forward to learning from more experienced workers in the field. One way to do this is to ask whether the company has a mentorship program; simply expressing interest can show that you would treat older co-workers with respect.
